"Misleading" Government Union Attacks Walberg Again

Outrageously Claims “Walberg would eliminate Social Security altogether”

Tipton, MI- Mark Schauer’s liberal supporters, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ union bosses, are at it again with another deceptive television ad attacking Tim Walberg. Earlier this week, the national, nonpartisan organization Factcheck.org called the government union’s first attack ad against Tim Walberg “misleading.” Now, the government union is cutting Tim Walberg’s statements midsentence and pasting them into a deceptive television ad about Social Security. The ad even makes the outrageously false claim that, “Walberg would eliminate Social Security altogether.”

“Mark Schauer has raided Social Security to pay for trillions of dollars in new spending, while Tim Walberg is committed to protecting Social Security and looking into long-term reforms that would allow younger workers the option to save their own money in their own name,” said Joe Wicks, Walberg campaign spokesperson.

“We need more jobs in Michigan, but instead of providing leadership, Mark Schauer is hiding behind his liberal supporters’ deceptive television ads. Voters are rejecting Mark Schauer’s votes for Obamacare, trillion dollar deficits and tax hikes, so all Congressman Schauer and his supporters feel they can do is smear Tim’s record. Michigan voters will reject their misleading, deceptive campaign,” added Wicks.

Factcheck.org Calls Government Union Attack Ad Against Tim Walberg Misleading

Factcheck.org Calls Government Union TV Ad

Against Tim Walberg “Misleading”

Will Mark Schauer Denounce the “Misleading” TV Ad?

Tipton, MI- Factcheck.org, which Mark Schauer recommends citizens to read to sort out fact from fiction, weighs in on the $750,000 American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ union television ad attacking Tim Walberg. Factcheck.org wrote:

"AFSCME’s ad attacking the Republican is misleading — beginning with the central theme that Walberg’s "votes helped burn down our economy, damaging families and industries across Michigan." The ad cites four votes, but none of them support such a claim."

"Let’s start with the middle-class tax cuts. The ad, which cost $750,000, says: "Rather than cut taxes for the middle class, Walberg sided with big oil and hedge funds — gave them tax loopholes." That’s not exactly true. He did vote for the middle-class tax cut in question in 2007, and when the tax cut bill came up again in 2008, it went unresolved before he left Congress."

"The ad also charges that Walberg "skipped out on a vote" to save auto industry jobs. He was in the hospital, recovering from surgery, when the House voted on, and easily passed, the automakers bailout bill."

Chris Gautz of the Jackson Citizen Patriot wrote today:

“Well, the nonpartisan website www.factcheck.org took a look and found it just as misleading as we did, and lays out a detailed and well-researched case.”

“Their analysis shows that Walberg didn't oppose middle-class tax cuts; he voted for them. It also shows that he didn't give tax loopholes to hedge funds and oil companies.”

“Despite the ad's opening claim that "his votes helped burn down our economy," all of the bills the ads cites as evidence were sponsored by Democrats, and they all passed in some version. And, none of those four bills were what led to the deep recession the country is still reeling from.”

“Mark Schauer should denounce this misleading TV ad by his liberal supporters and explain how his own votes for trillion dollar deficits, Obamacare and tax hikes are helping Michigan families,” said Tim Walberg.

“From day one, Congressman Mark Schauer has voted for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s big government agenda. They passed a budget that increases the national debt by trillions, voted for massive tax increases, and put the government in charge of health care, but all the American people are getting in return in more debt, higher taxes and fewer jobs. Mark Schauer obviously cannot defend his failed record, but it’s still a shame that Mark and his liberal allies are resorting to purposefully misleading attacks instead of fairly discussing these issues so important to the future of our nation. It’s sad that Mark Schauer and his supporters hold south central Michigan voters in such low regard with their cynical attacks,” added Walberg.

Tim Walberg Leads Schauer by 10%

From today's Jackson Citizen Patriot (click here to link to story):

Tim Walberg leads U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer by 10 points in poll done by conservative group
Published: Thursday, August 26, 2010, 10:27 AM Updated: Thursday, August 26, 2010, 11:40 AM
Chris Gautz | Jackson Citizen Patriot

A new poll out this week, commissioned by the conservative American Action Forum, shows Republican former congressman Tim Walberg with a 10-point lead over his Democratic rival, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer.

Among the 400 respondents who said they are likely to vote in the Nov. 2 election, 50 percent said they would vote for Walberg if the election were held today. Schauer received 40 percent, and 10 percent said they were undecided.

The poll has a 4.9 percent margin of error. You can view the crosstabs here.

The economy, by far, was the top issue of those surveyed, and two-thirds of respondents said they feel the country is headed on the wrong track.

The two candidates are fairly liked and disliked equally among voters.

Schauer's favorable/unfavorable rating was 40 to 36 percent, while Walberg's favorable/unfavorable rating was 41 to 31 percent.

President Obama had a higher favorable rating than either candidate, but he also had a higher unfavorable rating than both.

Less than a third of respondents said Schauer deserved reelection, compared with 55 percent that said someone else did.

On the issue of which candidate is more likely to keep taxes low, it was Walberg at 47 percent to Schauer's 17 percent.

Those surveyed were also given a list of criticisms that people might make of Schauer and were asked whether they would make them more or less likely to vote for him.

Fifty-eight percent said they were less likely to vote for Schauer because he avoided public forums during the health-care debate.

The same percentage said they were less likely to vote for Schauer due to his vote for the cap-and-trade bill which was described to respondents as a bill that "Democratic leaders have called a great big tax, and independent analysts say will cause job losses."

Schauer's vote for the stimulus bill caused 49 percent of respondents to say they are less likely to vote for him.

Fifty-one percent said they were less likely to vote for Schauer because he voted in favor of "ObamaCare, the Democratic health care reform bill."

On the question of which candidate is better described by the statement that they "will do the right thing to fix the health care reform bill," it was Walberg 37 percent to Schauer's 29 percent.

Tom Erickson, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee said Schauer's support of President Obama's agenda has taken a toll on Schauer.

“With Michigan’s economy still limping along, it’s no surprise that Mark Schauer is finding himself down in the polls," Erickson wrote.

"Any poll that does not include third-party candidates is by definition inaccurate," wrote Zack Pohl, spokesman for Schauer's campaign. "Third-party candidates won 5% of the vote in 2008, and this year there will be at least 3-4 third-party candidates on the November ballot. Moreover, this flawed survey does not test a key message, that Mark Schauer has consistently fought against unfair trade deals like NAFTA, while Tim Walberg supports unfair outsourcing policies that have shipped countless Michigan jobs to China."

Schauer makes "not true", "false tax attack"

From the Jackson Citizen Patriot (click here for link to article):

U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer claims Tim Walberg pledged to protect loophole protecting companies that outsource jobs, but is that true?
Published: Wednesday, August 11, 2010, 4:34 PM Updated: Thursday, August 12, 2010, 8:32 AM
Chris Gautz | Jackson Citizen Patriot

When U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer voted Tuesday to send $26.1 billion in aid to the states, he pointed out that one of the ways the bill was paid for was by closing “special tax loopholes that reward companies for outsourcing American jobs.”

And he has already been using it as a campaign issue.

“Tim Walberg, in his primary campaign, actually signed a pledge saying that he would protect that tax loophole that rewards our companies for outsourcing our jobs,” Schauer said Wednesday at a campaign kickoff event in Jackson.

But that’s not true. Just ask the non-partisan website factcheck.org, which Schauer often encouraged people to read to sort out fact from fiction during the health-care debate.

In April, when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released an attack ad against a Republican congressional candidate from Hawaii using basically the same language, FactCheck called it untrue and a “false tax attack.”

The Americans for Tax Reform pledge states the signer will “oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses; and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.”

Walberg signed the pledge a year ago, and it says nothing about the specific bill Schauer is referring to that was signed into law this week. Also, the bill was introduced three months after Walberg signed the pledge.

“Democrats are desperate to take voters’ eyes off of their dismal performance as stewards of our economy. That’s why they continue to roll out this disturbingly false claim about candidates and the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Quite simply, there has been no improvement in the economy or in job growth since Democrats took over. They have nothing to show for themselves in the run up to November,” ATR President Gover(sic) Norquist wrote in a statement.

The Schauer campaign points to a May 20, 2010 press release from ATR that a vote in favor of the bill that closed the loophole would violate the pledge.

In a statement Monday, the Schauer campaign said, "In May 2010, Americans for Tax Reform stated that their pledge required opposition to The American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010."

"Bottom line - Walberg supports outsourcing our jobs," Schauer campaign spokesman Zack Pohl wrote.

Schauer's campaign insists the ATR pledge does say something about this specific bill, because ATR stated this week that a vote in favor of the bill violated its pledge.

"Tim Walberg signed a pledge that ATR explicitly said would've required him to vote against a bill to close tax loopholes that reward companies for shipping jobs overseas," Pohl wrote in an e-mail. "Walberg's own campaign confirmed that he would've voted against closing these loopholes this week."

The National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce don't see the bill as closing a loophole, they describe it as taxing U.S. manufacturers.

“Mark Schauer is a big government liberal, so we expect him to criticize Tim Walberg for opposing tax increases," Walberg spokesman Joe Wicks wrote. "With Michigan in a recession, Mark Schauer voted for a failed $862 billion stimulus spending bill, a trillion dollar government takeover of health care, trillion dollar deficits and yesterday, as expected, he voted for higher taxes on American businesses."

Poll says Tim Walberg holds big lead over Brian Rooney in 7th Congressional District primary

Michigan political pundit Bill Ballenger has come out with a poll for his publication, Inside Michigan Politics, that suggests Tim Walberg holds a large lead over Brian Rooney heading into next week's 7th Congressional District primary showdown.

Ballenger tweeted on Thursday the following:

"Walberg Has Sizable Lead on Rooney in 7th CD Republican Primary Race, Although Nearly a Third of Voters Say They're Undecided"

The websites MichiganLiberal.com and Blogging for Michigan further reported on the poll that Walberg drew support from 48 percent of those polled, while Rooney was at 16 percent. Some 30 percent reportedly were undecided.

The winner of the primary between Rooney, Walberg and Marvin Carlson gets to face U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer in November.

No word on the methodology of the poll or when it was conducted, but I left a message for Ballenger this afternoon. I'll update as soon as I get anything more.

Ex-Congressman Tim Walberg tops fund raising

Walberg has raised more money, but faces strong challenge from GOP rival Rooney

DEB PRICE
Detroit News Washington Bureau
Washington -- Tim Walberg, the former Republican congressman from Tipton trying to get back his south-central Michigan seat, outraised his top Republican rival in the latest quarter, campaign filings show.
Walberg raised $159,521 in the quarter ending June 30, nearly all of which was donated by individuals rather than PACs (political action committees).
He has $364,398 in cash, his Federal Election Commission records filed late Thursday night show. So far in the election cycle, he's raised $701,446.
Walberg narrowly lost to Rep. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, in 2008. But to get a shot at a rematch, he has to win the Aug. 3 Republican primary.
The other top Republican money-raiser in Michigan's south-central 7th Congressional District is Dexter attorney Brian Rooney. He has raised $114,493 in the latest quarter, bringing his total raised to $415,766. Most of it -- $102,344 -- was donated by individuals.
Rooney, whose family owns the Pittsburgh Steelers, has given himself a loan of $279,604, his FEC documents show. Walberg, a former pastor, hasn't added to his war chest.
Rooney has slightly more money than Schauer as he heads into the primary -- $419,116. Political analyst Steve Mitchell expects Walberg to emerge as the Republican nominee.
"Walberg is very popular with Republican primary voters," said Mitchell, chairman of Mitchell Research and Communications.
"He has residual goodwill with Republican primary voters having served in Congress, and he has enough money to finish what he needs to do in that (comparatively inexpensive) media market."
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the seat as a "toss-up," meaning either the eventual Republican nominee or the Democratic incumbent could win. That underscores the stakes in the Schauer [Walberg]-Rooney fight.
The victor of the Republican primary will face a well-financed incumbent: Schauer reported having nearly $1.65 million in cash after the latest quarter of fundraising.

Former U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg has just released his first television ad of the 2010 campaign.

In the ad, titled "Our Spirit Remains Unbroken," you see Walberg driving in his truck and walking in front of his home with a dog. There are a number of residents from the district in the ad, including Eric Beda, who established the Grace Tutoring Center in Jackson.

“We need to return to the traditional values that made America great: Lower taxes, less spending and more freedom. It’s what I’ve always stood for,” Walberg says in the ad. “Some say conservative values have gone out of style, maybe in (Democratic House Speaker Nancy) Pelosi’s district, but around here we love our families, our country and we’re proud to be Americans.”

In a statement, Walberg said people are joining his campaign because they know he is the 'principled, proven conservative in this race who they can trust to work for lower taxes, less spending and more freedom.'

Fmr. Sec. of Energy and U.S. Sen. Spencer Abraham Endorses Tim Walberg

Former U.S. Secretary of Energy and U.S. Senator

Spencer Abraham Endorses Tim Walberg

Tipton, MI- Spencer Abraham, who served as U.S. Secretary of Energy and U.S. Senator, today announced his endorsement of Tim Walberg’s candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives. During his tenure as Secretary, Secretary Spencer Abraham refocused the Department of Energy on homeland security issues following the 9/11 attacks, spearheaded the department’s energy technology development efforts, and served as a strong voice for nuclear energy. As U.S. Senator, he successfully passed breakthrough technology legislation and compiled a solid pro-business record for his work to enhance America’s competitiveness in the world.

"Our nation is facing significant economic, energy, and national security challenges, and we need thoughtful, tested conservative leaders working to strengthen America. Tim Walberg is that man,” said Spencer Abraham.

“Tim’s commitment to encouraging private sector job creation, moving our nation toward energy independence, and supporting our troops and national security community is clear and proven. I strongly endorse Tim Walberg and encourage all Republicans, Independents, and Reagan Democrats to join me so we can change the course this Congress is taking our nation,” added Abraham.

“Secretary Spencer Abraham’s leadership at the Department of Energy during a critical time for our nation and his significant legislative achievements as a U.S. Senator to make America more competitive around the globe exemplifies public service. I am truly honored and grateful to receive Secretary Abraham’s endorsement. With our federal government running trillion dollar deficits, passage of a trillion dollar government takeover of health care and an unwillingness by the majority in Congress to pursue an ‘all of the above’ energy policy, we need principled, conservative leadership in Congress,” said Tim Walberg.

Schauer Finally Gives Away Rangel Cash, What About Skipping Committee Hearing?

Schauer Finally Gives Away Rangel Campaign Cash, When Will

He Give Away Money Raised While Skipping Committee Hearing?

Jackson, MI- Congressman Mark Schauer, who paid the state of Michigan over $200,000 for violating campaign finance laws, finally gave away the campaign contributions he received from embattled and now former Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel. Schauer said he returned the money “as a matter of conscience.”

Last year, Mark Schauer skipped his legislative committee hearing to attend his own DC lobbyist fundraiser. Jackson Surgeon Dr. Paul Kenyon said at the time, “Mark Schauer should give his salary back to the taxpayers for the time he didn’t show up for work and at the very least donate his lobbyist campaign contributions from that fundraiser to a worthwhile charity to truly help his constituents.” Did Mark Schauer return his salary or give those campaign contributions to charity?

“Unless Congressman Schauer secretly returned the money, apparently skipping his committee hearing to attend his own Washington D.C. PAC fundraiser did not violate Congressman Schauer’s conscience,” said Walberg campaign spokesman Joe Wicks.

“Along with voting for trillion dollar deficits and a government takeover of health care, Mark Schauer continues to create campaign finance problems in Washington just like he did in Michigan, and he is one of the reasons Washington is broken,” added Wicks.

Stimulus Plan After One Year: Higher Unemployment, Jobs Overseas

One Year after the Stimulus Package:

Higher Unemployment in U.S., Taxpayer Dollars

Creating Jobs Overseas

Walberg Calls for Less Government Spending, Lower Taxes, Free-Market Health Care Reforms

Tipton, MI- One year ago today President Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus package into law. Since signing the legislation, the national unemployment rate has climbed from 7.6% to 9.7% and the cost of the stimulus package has increased by $75 billion.

Congressman Mark Schauer, who voted for the stimulus bill, told his constituents that there was no pork or earmarks in the stimulus bill. Congressman Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight” to ensure the stimulus was “administered efficiently and effectively.” Michigan’s unemployment rate has increased from 12% to 14.6%, while billions of stimulus dollars created thousands of jobs overseas.

Though Congressman Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight”, here are a few examples of how stimulus dollars were wasted:
· $2 billion in energy spending created 6,000 jobs overseas.
· “researchers at Penn State University received $1.57 million to search for fossils in Argentina”
· “$100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows.”
· $1 million to put up signs in Ohio advertising the use of stimulus funds.
· “The National Institutes of Health got $219,000 in funds to study whether female college students are more likely to ‘hook up’ after drinking alcohol.”
· “Two million dollars in stimulus money went to build a replica railroad as a tourist attraction in Carson City, Nev.”
· “Half a million dollars went to Arizona State University to study the genetic makeup of ants to determine distinctive roles in ant colonies”
· “$450,000 went to the University of Arizona to study the division of labor in ant colonies.”
· “The State University of New York at Buffalo won $390,000 to study young adults who drink malt liquor and smoke marijuana.”
· “$5 million grant from the Department of Energy to create a geothermal energy system for the Oak Ridge City Center shopping mall … the mall has been losing tenants for years and is mostly empty.”

“Less government spending, lower taxes, and free-market health care reforms will empower individuals and small businesses, grow our economy, and spur job creation. Unfortunately, Mark Schauer and his liberal Washington allies wasted taxpayer dollars, spent billions to create jobs overseas and voted for trillion dollar deficits,” said Tim Walberg.

“America is great and prosperous when government is limited and citizens are free to use their God-given talents to care for their family and help their community,” Walberg added.

Poll: Walberg 46%, Schauer 37%

Tim Walberg Leads Mark Schauer 46% to 37%

Against Other Republican Candidate, Schauer Leads 39% to 31%

Tipton, MI- Recent polling demonstrates that Freshman Democrat Congressman Mark Schauer is very vulnerable to defeat, as Republican Challenger Tim Walberg leads him 46% to 37% in the head to head ballot, and when “leaners” are included, Tim Walberg leads 50% to 40%. Mark Schauer does, however, lead Republican candidate Brian Rooney 39% to 31%. Below is the Polling Memo from Adam Geller of National Research Inc. National Research Inc. is a national political and corporate polling firm, whose client list includes Governor Chris Christie, members of Congress and State Legislatures, the NRCC, NRSC and RGA.

“Mark Schauer has been on a spending spree and destroying jobs. Voters want a proven, principled conservative who will watch over their tax dollars and work to grow our economy,” said Tim Walberg.

TO: INTERESTED PARTIES
FROM: ADAM GELLER, NATIONAL RESEARCH INC.
RE: SURVEY RESULTS
DATE: JANUARY 18, 2010

The political environment in Michigan’s 7th congressional district has seriously deteriorated for Democrats over the past year. The generic environment favors Republicans, Tim Walberg is handily beating Freshman Congressman Mark Schauer in the head to head ballot, and Schauer’s key ratings, such as job approval, re-elect and image, show that he has done nothing to distinguish himself. Combined, these factors place Schauer high atop the list of vulnerable incumbents.

Specific findings:

The generic ballot favors the Republicans. By a score of 41%-35%, voters prefer the Republican to the Democrat in the generic congressional ballot.

Republican challenger Tim Walberg is over-performing the generic and is handily defeating Mark Schauer in the ballot test. Tim Walberg is currently beating Schauer in the ballot 46%-37%. When “leaners” are included, Tim’s lead expands to 50%-40%. Some of this is a function of Tim’s personal appeal; against Republican Brian Rooney, Schauer leads, 39%-31%.

Schauer is vulnerable on several fronts. Mark Schauer just has bad numbers for an incumbent. Only 37% of voters would re-elect him, while 40% say they prefer a new person. Furthermore, 40% approve of the job he’s done, while 39% disapprove. These are bad numbers for an incumbent at the very beginning of a campaign in which he will find himself on the defensive, as is the nature of such contests.

The President and the Speaker have bad numbers too. President Obama has a job approval rating of 48%, with 48% disapproving. And only 35% have a favorable image of Speaker Pelosi, while 55% have an unfavorable image.

The Bottom Line: The overall environment has soured for the Democrats in this district. Schauer’s numbers are flat, and will not get any better during the course of a spirited campaign. The President and the Speaker are currently a drag on Schauer. Add to that the turnout dynamics of a mid-term election, and it is very clear that the Freshman Democratic Congressman belongs at the very top of the list of vulnerable Democrats.

National Research Inc. conducted a telephone survey in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District on January 11-12, 2010. The survey was conducted among 300 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 5.66% in 95 out of 100 cases. Interviews were stratified geographically to conform with likely 2010 voter turnout in the district.

Schauer is latest Dem to trail in early poll- The Hill

By Aaron Blake - 01/18/10 02:28 PM ET

Another poll; another Democratic incumbent down big.
Just a few days after Reps. Vic Snyder (D-Ark.) and Steve Driehaus (D-Ohio) saw themselves trailing by 17 points apiece in polling conducted for a Democratic-leaning blog, a Republican poll shows freshman Rep. Mark Schauer (D-Mich.) down by nine.
The National Research Inc. poll, conducted for former Rep. Tim Walberg's (R-Mich.) campaign, has Walberg leading Schauer 46-37, and 50-40 with "leaners."
Another, lesser-known Republican, Brian Rooney, trails Schauer 39-31 in the poll. Rooney is the brother of another freshman congressman, Florida's Tom Rooney (R).
President Obama is at 48 percent approval in the district, with 48 percent disapproving.
The poll was conducted last week among 300 likely voters. The margin of error is 5.7 percent.
In addition to Schauer, Driehaus and Snyder (who announced his retirement last week), Reps. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.), Dina Titus (D-Nev.) and Frank Kratovil (D-Md.) have also seen some troubling polls recently.
While the evidence is so far anecdotal, there has yet to be some really good counter-evidence -- i.e. good early polling for vulnerable Democratic incumbents. Freshman Rep. Larry Kissell (D-N.C.) has come the closest, leading a Public Policy Polling (D) survey against a generic Republican 53-39 last week.

More Taxpayer-Funded Deception from Mark Schauer

More Taxpayer-Funded Deception from Mark Schauer

Schauer Tries to Hide Votes for Wall Street Bailouts, Deficit Spending, Bonuses

Tipton, MI- Last October, Mark Schauer was caught telling constituents in a taxpayer paid for mass mailer that he opposed specific pork barrel spending items, but it was later revealed that Schauer in fact voted to fund projects he claimed to oppose. Schauer has once again sent out a taxpayer paid for mass mailer that is clearly intended to deceive. He tells constituents what they want to hear, but his voting record does not match his rhetoric on Wall Street bailouts, deficit spending, and bonuses for bailed out executives.

Examples of Mark Schauer’s deception from his taxpayer paid for mailer:

Schauer’s statement in the mailer: “It’s time to STOP bailing out Wall Street when it’s flooding right here in Michigan.”
Schauer’s record:
· Voted against halting the second $350 billion from TARP and requiring the original $350 billion to be returned to the Treasury (Roll Call 25 on 1-21-09).
· Voted against shutting down TARP and requiring all the money to be returned to the Treasury to reduce the national debt (Roll Call 967 on 12-11-09).
· Voted for a permanent Wall Street bailout fund (Roll Call 968 on 12-11-09).

Schauer’s statement in the mailer: “I recently voted against raising our national debt ceiling – because spending more money isn’t the way out of this economic mess.”
Schauer’s record:
· Voted for Speaker Pelosi’s Budget that increases the national debt by $5.3 trillion over the next five years. [Roll Call Vote 192 on 4-2-09]
· Voted for the $787 billion spending “stimulus” package. [Roll Call Vote 46 on 1-28-09]
· Voted for the $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill that increased spending by 8.4%, included over 8,000 earmarks, and raised spending for the operation of Congress by 11%. [Roll Call Vote 86 on 2-25-09]
· Voted for the $447 billion omnibus appropriation bill that, excluding emergency appropriations, increased spending by 12.5% over last year’s level and was 24.4% above Fiscal Year 2008 levels. [Roll Call Vote 948 on 12-10-09]

Schauer’s statement in the mailer: “Cracking down on bonuses for Wall Street CEOs”
Schauer’s record:
· Voted for the “stimulus” package [Roll Call Vote 46 on 1-28-09] that allowed 73 AIG Executives to each receive $1 million and above bonuses after taxpayers bailed out the firm. Schauer insisted he read the “stimulus” legislation [Daily Telegram 7-29-09].

“With south central Michigan families struggling in this terrible economy and the national debt skyrocketing, Mark Schauer continues to send out deceptive taxpayer paid for mailers to try to hide his votes for wasteful spending and trillion dollar deficits. I stood up for Michigan families by voting against the Wall Street bailout and House Speaker Pelosi’s trillion dollar budgets,” said Tim Walberg

“We can grow Michigan’s economy again if government will cut spending and reduce the tax burden to encourage hard work, investment, and job creation,” added Walberg.

In the endorsement letter, ABC of Michigan President Chris Fisher stated the purpose of ABC’s PAC “is to promote sound government at all levels, to develop and maintain the free enterprise system, to promote and support the development of a favorable business climate for the economy.”

“On behalf of Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan PAC, we are honored to endorse your candidacy for United States Congress,” Fisher added.

“The members of the Associated Builders and Contractors are the backbone of our economy and I am grateful to stand with them in advancing free enterprise and economic growth to turn Michigan’s economy around,” said Tim Walberg.

Background:

“ABC is a statewide and national trade association representing contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers and related firms in the industrial and commercial building industry. ABC is devoted to building Michigan’s economy by advancing the merit shop construction philosophy which encourages open competition and a free enterprise approach that awards contracts to the lowest responsible bidder based on merit.
New Report Reveals Wasteful Stimulus Spending

New Report Reveals Wasteful Spending in Stimulus

Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight”, yet $6 million spent to preserve three Washington DC public relations jobs

Tipton, MI- A report released yesterday revealed wasteful spending from the $787 billion stimulus plan approved by Congress in February.

Congressman Mark Schauer, who read and voted for the stimulus bill, told his constituents that there was no pork or earmarks in the stimulus bill (Click here for video). Congressman Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight” to ensure the stimulus was “administered efficiently and effectively.” (Click here for source)

Waste found in stimulus package spending, as reported in The Hill, includes (Click for source):
· “researchers at Penn State University received $1.57 million to search for fossils in Argentina”
· “$100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows.”
· “The National Institutes of Health got $219,000 in funds to study whether female college students are more likely to “hook up” after drinking alcohol.”
· “A dinner cruise company based in Chicago received nearly $1 million in funds to combat terrorism.”
· $6 million to Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s Washington DC public relations firm to preserve three jobs.
· “The University of Hawaii collected $210,000 to study the learning patterns of honeybees”
· “$5 million grant from the Department of Energy to create a geothermal energy system for the Oak Ridge City Center shopping mall … the mall has been losing tenants for years and is mostly empty.”
· “$4.7 million that Lockheed Martin received to conduct advance research of supersonic jet travel”

“With south-central Michigan families suffering in this terrible economy and our nation drowning in debt, Congress needs to stop overspending and provide across-the-board tax relief to encourage job creation. Instead, Mark Schauer wasted taxpayers’ hard earned dollars on searching for fossils in Argentina, puppet shows, and creating a $5 million energy system for a privately-owned mall that is mostly empty,” said Tim Walberg.

“Despite Mark Schauer’s promise of vigorous oversight, $6 million, the total income of 125 Michigan families, was spent at Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s Washington DC public relations firm to preserve three jobs,” Walberg added.

The $6 million spent at Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s firm preserved three Washington DC public relations jobs at a cost of $2 million each. The average Michigan household income is $48,000, so the $6 million is equal to the annual income of 125 Michigan families.

Jackson Citizen Patriot: "Congressman fails his health care test"

Jackson Citizen Patriot Editorial: “Congressman fails his health-care test”
Excerpts from the Editorial:
“Fresh from his historic vote for a health-care overhaul, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer stormed through his congressional district last week to seek public input. Unfortunately, it was after the fact.”
“Schauer is putting ideology above what is best for the people he represents.”
“we fear the biggest loser would be employer-sponsored health plans. Schauer says he believes that the rise in health costs would be contained; he couldn't provide any facts to back that up. We were deeply disappointed in his failure to explain exactly how this will save businesses money — a claim he has made repeatedly in public.”
“we are growing suspicious that his views on health reform, cap-and-trade energy policy, pro-union "card check" legislation and other issues do more than clash with a majority of his constituents. His stances are not serving the district's best interests.”
“we hope Schauer can do more than reiterate the liberal rhetoric when this health-care bill comes around again.”
“Blitz of town halls does not change fact that this legislation would be bad for Jackson and the entire 7th Congressional District.”
Full Editorial:
Congressman fails his health-care test
By Jackson Citizen Patriot staff
November 18, 2009, 10:18AM
Fresh from his historic vote for a health-care overhaul, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer stormed through his congressional district last week to seek public input. Unfortunately, it was after the fact. If that seems like a curious way of dealing with constituents, it only stands to reason when it comes to this subject: The normally pragmatic Schauer is putting ideology above what is best for the people he represents.

Schauer has baffled us with his unwavering support for the House health-care bill. The public should be deeply dubious that this legislation will live up to financial projections or be anything but a disaster for many businesses.
Issue

Local congressman defends health-care vote in public meetings.

Our say

Blitz of town halls does not change fact that this legislation would be bad for Jackson and the entire 7th Congressional District.
The congressman used his town-hall meetings and a column on this page on Tuesday to argue that American health care needs a trip to the physician. No argument there. Costs are out of control, and too many people lack insurance. The system is inefficient.

There are sensible fixes that can be made, such as barring insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. Health-insurance cooperatives (particularly across state lines) could boost individuals' power to buy health policies.

The House bill that Schauer voted for goes too far, creating a potential chain reaction that would increase health costs and then shift them to employers and their employees.

It would cram tens of millions of people onto the health-care rolls, an expansion that the system could not quickly accommodate. It would reduce Medicare payments to health-care providers, many of whom lose money on Medicare under the current system of reimbursement.

Who would pay for a more expensive system? Clearly, someone has to, and we fear the biggest loser would be employer-sponsored health plans. Schauer says he believes that the rise in health costs would be contained; he couldn't provide any facts to back that up. We were deeply disappointed in his failure to explain exactly how this will save businesses money — a claim he has made repeatedly in public. How can costs go down when utilization goes up with everyone in the system?

Schauer has always held staunchly Democratic views but, particularly in the state Legislature, tempered them with tenacity in looking after his district. Indeed, he has brought home the pork since going to Washington this year. But we are growing suspicious that his views on health reform, cap-and-trade energy policy, pro-union "card check" legislation and other issues do more than clash with a majority of his constituents. His stances are not serving the district's best interests. We will see in a year if voters feel the same way.

Meanwhile, not all is lost as this health-care reform unfolds. The Senate is working on its own legislation, which ultimately must be reconciled with the just-passed House bill. We can only hope the Senate does a better job than the House dealing with the cost side of the health-care equation.

And we hope Schauer can do more than reiterate the liberal rhetoric when this health-care bill comes around again.

Mark Schauer's Deceptive Taxpayer-Funded Mailer

Schauer mail piece page 2

Mark Schauer Voted to Fund Wasteful Projects He Bragged About Opposing

Schauer Should Refund Taxpayers for Purposefully Deceptive Mailing

Tipton, MI- Congressman Mark Schauer recently sent a taxpayer-funded mailing to his constituents titled “Wasteful spending in Washington only hurts Michigan’s economy” in which he listed specific wasteful projects that he claimed oppose (click to view page 1 and page 2 his mailing). However, Mark Schauer failed to tell his constituents that he voted to fund sixteen of the projects he listed as wasteful.

Below are projects Mark Schauer listed and identified as “wasteful” in his taxpayer-funded mailing. For each project, there was an amendment to remove funding from legislation, but each attempt to remove funding failed. As a result, funding for these projects remained in legislation, and in each case, Mark Schauer voted in favor of the legislation to fund these projects … the same exact projects he tried to make us believe he opposed.

“Maine lobster research”
“Training weather forecasters in California”
“The Summer Flounder and Black Sea Initiative in New Jersey”
“A kinetic energy interceptor program.”
“The Institute of Seafood Studies in Louisiana”
“The Commercial Kitchen Business Incubator project in California”
“The Philadelphia Museum of Art Transportation Improvement Program”
“Restoring Good Fellow Lodge in Indiana”
“Funds for traditional arts in New York”

Tim Walberg Announces for U.S. House

“I trust the American people, while Mark Schauer trusts big government” Tipton, MI- Tim Walberg today announced he is running for the U.S. House of Representatives. “The people of south central Michigan are hard working, entrepreneurial and care deeply for their community, but are struggling mightily due to excessive government spending, recent tax increases, and a big government that is squashing hope and economic opportunities,” said Walberg "I cannot sit idly while Congressman Schauer votes to raise taxes, spend trillions we don’t have and bring the failed Granholm strategies he advanced in Michigan to Washington D.C. In contrast, I will fight for Michigan families by working to balance the budget, move America toward energy independence, and provide across-the-board tax relief to reward hard work and spur job creation. I trust the American people, while Mark Schauer trusts big government,” Walberg concluded. Background:Congressman Tim Walberg represented the people of the 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2007 to 2009. He fought to make government live within its means, prevent tax increases, move America toward energy independence, make health care more affordable, support our troops, secure our border, and defend our traditional values. Mark Schauer voted for Speaker Pelosi’s massive “cap and trade” national energy tax. [Roll Call Vote 477 on 6-26-09]Congressman John Dingell, a key Michigan Democrat and longtime Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said that "nobody in this country realizes that cap and trade is a tax, and it’s a great big one."
