New Report Reveals Wasteful Stimulus Spending

New Report Reveals Wasteful Spending in Stimulus

Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight”, yet $6 million spent to preserve three Washington DC public relations jobs

Tipton, MI
- A report released yesterday revealed wasteful spending from the $787 billion stimulus plan approved by Congress in February.

Congressman Mark Schauer, who read and voted for the stimulus bill, told his constituents that there was no pork or earmarks in the stimulus bill (Click here for video).  Congressman Schauer pledged “vigorous oversight” to ensure the stimulus was “administered efficiently and effectively.” (Click here for source)

Waste found in stimulus package spending, as reported in The Hill, includes (Click for source):

·          “researchers at Penn State University received $1.57 million to search for fossils in Argentina”

·         “$100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows.”

·         “The National Institutes of Health got $219,000 in funds to study whether female college students are more likely to “hook up” after drinking alcohol.”

·         “A dinner cruise company based in Chicago received nearly $1 million in funds to combat terrorism.”

·         $6 million to Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s Washington DC public relations firm to preserve three jobs.

·          “Two million dollars in stimulus money went to build a replica railroad as a tourist attraction in Carson City, Nev.”

·          “Half a million dollars went to Arizona State University to study the genetic makeup of ants to determine distinctive roles in ant colonies”

·         “$450,000 went to the University of Arizona to study the division of labor in ant colonies.”

·         “The State University of New York at Buffalo won $390,000 to study young adults who drink malt liquor and smoke marijuana.”

·          “The University of Hawaii collected $210,000 to study the learning patterns of honeybees”

·         “$5 million grant from the Department of Energy to create a geothermal energy system for the Oak Ridge City Center shopping mall … the mall has been losing tenants for years and is mostly empty.”

·         “$4.7 million that Lockheed Martin received to conduct advance research of supersonic jet travel”

“With south-central Michigan families suffering in this terrible economy and our nation drowning in debt, Congress needs to stop overspending and provide across-the-board tax relief to encourage job creation.  Instead, Mark Schauer wasted taxpayers’ hard earned dollars on searching for fossils in Argentina, puppet shows, and creating a $5 million energy system for a privately-owned mall that is mostly empty,” said Tim Walberg.

“Despite Mark Schauer’s promise of vigorous oversight, $6 million, the total income of 125 Michigan families, was spent at Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s Washington DC public relations firm to preserve three jobs,” Walberg added.

The $6 million spent at Hillary Clinton’s pollster’s firm preserved three Washington DC public relations jobs at a cost of $2 million each.  The average Michigan household income is $48,000, so the $6 million is equal to the annual income of 125 Michigan families.
